Two Dead, Four Injured In West Philadelphia Playground Shooting

September 12 2008

It was the conclusion of the fifth season of the X-Tra Miles Developmental Basketball League at McAlpin Playground at 10:30 pm when 15 shots were fired into a group of people.  Miles Mack at age 42 was hit in the buttocks.  The bullet hit a major artery and he was pronounced dead at 10:44 pm. at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Darren Hankins at the age of 19, was pronounced dead at the scene as well.  Speculation is that he was the intended target.

The shooting was done by 2 males in hoodies as the trophies for the league were being handed out.  6 Men were hit in total.  An 18 year old suffered a bullet would to his finger. The suspects fled and were still on the loose after this vicious Philadelphia playground shooting.

“This was a vicious and cowardly act of violence, as obviously is evidenced by most of these people were shot in the back,” Richard Ross the Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

“This had nothing to do with the basketball game,” Ross said.

The victims ranged in years from 20-45 years old and were all taken to the hospital of the university of Pennsylvania.  Sandra Mack had a memory of how her son would say to her, “Mom, this is my neighborhood and these are my people.”

Our deepest condolences go out to the Mack family for this tragic and untimely loss of Miles Mack.  Also our deepest condolences go out to the Hankins family for their loss of Darren Hankins.  About 50 people were there at the time of the shootings, and police are trying to get anyone to come forward with information about the shooters.

Please contact homocide detectives if you have any information at (215) 686-3334.
