Miles Mack Funeral
September 20 2008
Miles Mack Funeral was yesterday, Friday September 19th at the Metropolitan Baptist Church. More than 1,000 people showed up to pay their respects to Miles Mack who was gunned down in the shooting a few weeks ago.
Miles Mack at age 42 founded the X-tra Miles Developement Basketball League to help with the youth violence, was gunned down on the basketball court by 2 hooded men on September 11th. He was there hosting his basketball league at the Manuta playground. It was the championship game, the last game where they give out the trophies to the teams.
The suposed target of the shootings, Darren Hankins at age 19 was also gunend down. 4 other people were wounded in the shooting. 15 Bullets came rushing at the group of people at McAlpin Playground at 36th and Aspen Street. Miles Mack heroically threw himself on top of one of his younger players when the bullets rang out.
We were standing there, and he handed me the trophy and we both turned our backs,” Levon Torrence, 22, said “Next thing he was on top of me.”
Levon Torrence said Miles Mack asked him if he was ok and then was silent. Miles Mack probably saved the young mans life. This man is a hero and one that will be remembered forever.
His friends and family will say the X-Tra miles basketball league will keep going and Miles Mack will never be forgotten.
Our condolences go out to Miles Mack’s family and loved ones in this tragic loss. Vist the X-tra Miles Basketball League website to learn how you can give donations to this great cause.
