Last night a South Philadelphia Business caugh fire. It was a cabinet lamination business on 2nd and Reed street. People began calling in at 8:33pm last night September 23 2008. 32 people had to evacuate their hoes that lived near by.

Executive Fire Chief Daniel Williams said they had to evacuate the people because of the high risk that the fire could spread to the nearby rowhomes. They finally got the fire under control about an hour later at 9:45pm.

13 homes in total had to be evacuated. The cause of the fire is still under investigation the Police report says.

I usually don’t comment on my stories but this fire was right down the block from me and it was not a small type of fire, this was probably the largest fire I have seen (in person). Noone was hurt but one male was taken to Thomas Jefferson Hospital, and we hope he is going to be ok.

The gunfire rang out in West Philadelphia as 3 teenagers were sitting on their row house porch Thursday September 18th 2008. The 3 teens including Hakim Griffin started to run when they heard the shots.

All 3 of the teens were shot and only 2 of them managed to get away and get inside a row home in the 200 block of South Ithan Street. Hakim Griffen was not one of the ones to get away, he fell to the ground with multiple gunshot wounds including one to the head.

He remains in critical condition at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania while his 2 friends age 14 and 17 are in stable condition.

“All I know is that I was in the house feeding my son and I heard a pop, pop, pop,” said Hakim’s grandmother, Cynthai Griffin.

She said her grandson Hakim was a respectful young man and she does not know why anyone would be shooting at him or his friends. While looking at the 12 or so bullet holes in the front of her house she said our kids are killing eachother right and left, and that might be something we need to look into.

miles mack

Miles Mack at age 42 founded the X-tra Miles Developement Basketball League to help with the youth violence, was gunned down on the basketball court by 2 hooded men on September 11th. He was there hosting his basketball league at the Manuta playground. It was the championship game, the last game where they give out the trophies to the teams.

The suposed target of the shootings, Darren Hankins at age 19 was also gunend down. 4 other people were wounded in the shooting. 15 Bullets came rushing at the group of people at McAlpin Playground at 36th and Aspen Street. Miles Mack heroically threw himself on top of one of his younger players when the bullets rang out.

We were standing there, and he handed me the trophy and we both turned our backs,” Levon Torrence, 22, said “Next thing he was on top of me.”

Levon Torrence said Miles Mack asked him if he was ok and then was silent. Miles Mack probably saved the young mans life. This man is a hero and one that will be remembered forever.

His friends and family will say the X-Tra miles basketball league will keep going and Miles Mack will never be forgotten.

Our condolences go out to Miles Mack’s family and loved ones in this tragic loss. Vist the X-tra Miles Basketball League website to learn how you can give donations to this great cause.

It was a dispute about the dress code for girls at Sayres Highschool which is in West Philadelphia. The fighting happened this morning and it ended when 20 students were arrested. This started because of a dispute over the Sayre Highschool Dress code.

It all begain at 9:45 am when a few police officers who were assigned to the Sayre High at 58th and Walnut told several girls that their dress did not match with the dress code the school district had set out. The students who were being denied entry then began to forcefully enter the school.

“We’re serious about controlling the climate at the school and if we see anyone disrupt that climate, we’re going to act accordingly,” Fernando Gallard, spokesman for the Philadelphia School District said. “If criminal charges are warranted, than we’re going to pursue them.”

2 officers that were assigned to the school then tried to stop the girls from entering at which time a physical confrontation broke out. Other students both male and female began to attack the officers who were trying to enforce the dress code and do their job correctly. Bother officers were struck several times over the Sayre Highschool Dress Code Fight.

One police officer was punched in the face, and backup was immediately called in. District officers rushed to the Sayre Highschool melee, and began to disperse the crowd.

In total 15 boys and 5 girls were arrested. Two were charged with assault on a police and one was charged with assault on a police officer. The 17 other students were all charged with disorderly conduct. The Sayre Highschool Dress Code has been the cause of some debate from the students but nothing as serious as this event.
